How To Alphabetize In Word

Alphabetizing long lists of words or names can be a tedious task. Fortunately, word processors—like Microsoft Word, OpenOffice Writer, and AbiWord—have the functionality to filter and alphabetize built in. To alphabetize in Word or any other popular word processing program, follow these instructions:

  • 1

Open your document that contains the list, or input your unordered list to a new document.

  • 2

Select the entire list that you would like alphabetized.

  • 3

In the home menu tab, find the icon that contains “AZ↓”.

  • 4

Click the icon to sort your list alphabetically by the first word, either in ascending (A to Z) or descending (Z to A) order.
