How To Open ODF Files
ODF files are Open Document Format files. ODF is a universal standard format that is readable by several different programs, such as word processors or presentation makers. You will typically see the following file extensions for the following files:
- *.odt for word processor documents
- *.ods for spreadsheet documents
- *.odp for presentation documents
Opening ODF files are simple, and the best program to use is from the OpenOffice Suite, a free open source alternative to Microsoft Office. OpenOffice Suite is equipped with programs to open ODF files and produce word documents, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, and databases.
Download and install OpenOffice Suite.
Depending on the type of file you need to open, determine the program you will need to use. For example, if you have a word processing document, you will need to open OpenOffice Writer.
Click File > Open.
Select the ODF file you wish to open.
Read and/ or edit the ODF file. If you make changes to the file, make sure to save your changes by clicking File > Save.
