How To Resize A Picture

Digital pictures are often too large to easily send through email or upload to a website. If you need to resize your picture, there are a variety of tools available to help with this task. We recommend using GIMP—a free open-source alternative to programs like Photoshop!

  • How To Resize A Picture With GIMP

  • 1

    Download and install GIMP.

  • 2

Once GIMP is installed, open the program for use.

  • 3

Click File > Open. Browse for the file you wish to resize.

  • 4

Open the Scale Image tool by clicking Image > Scale Image. This will open a new window.

  • 5

Choose your resize method. You can choose between pixels (px), inches (in), or percentage reduced. Enter the value that you want into one field and the others will maintain proportions so that the image does not appear stretched or skewed.

  • 6

Select your quality setting. Click the Quality pull-down menu and select the type of resampling you would like.

  • 7

Click Scale to resize the image. Click the Edit menu and select Undo if you would like to start over.

  • 8

Once you are happy with your changes, Save your picture by clicking File > Save.
