How To Sync Music To iPod

If you own an iPod, you know iTunes is the recommended software to sync music, audiobooks, and podcasts to iPods. While iTunes is free, not everyone likes its functions or that it serves you advertisements.

Luckily, there are other options available for you to sync music to iPod without iTunes. HowSpot recommends Songbird, a free open source application that handles all your digital media management needs. Get started with Songbird with the instructions below.


  • Set Up Songbird

    Download and install your free copy of Songbird.

    Follow the setup wizard’s prompts to install Songbird on your computer.

    Make sure that you leave Songbird iPod Device Support checked during installation.

    Launch Songbird for use.

  • 5

    A prompt will appear asking if you’ve previously used your iPod with iTunes, and if you’d like to change your library over to Songbird. Click Yes. (This will only appear the first time you use Songbird.)

    You’re now ready to upload your audio media to Songbird.

  • Sync Your iPod

    Launch Songbird for use.

    Open the Songbird preferences menu and select the iPod icon.

    Choose your automatic sync preferences. You can choose to update all songs and playlists, or only certain playlists, or manually update.

    To add audio media to your iPod, drag the song, audiobook, or podcast from your library to your iPod icon (listed in the left-hand column).

    Select your iPod icons and check that all your audio media was successfully uploaded.
